Town & Gown hosts concert for YSS youth
Grammy-nominated Imani Winds performed for YSS staff and shelter and residential treatment youth at a special event on Dec. 9.
Held at the First United Methodist Church in Ames, the concert was organized by the Ames Town & Gown Chamber Music Association. The organization brings musical ensembles and emerging artists from around the world to perform for the Ames community in intimate settings and participate in educational outreach events, especially with young people.
In addition to performing songs, the internationally-renowned wind quintet interacted with the audience, offering insight into their instruments. They also took questions from youth and socialized with attendees after the event.
Imani Winds has toured in Asia, Europe, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand, and regularly performs in prominent concert venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. Their recording “The Classical Underground” was nominated for a Grammy Award, and the group has a permanent presence in the classical music section of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.
YSS is grateful for the opportunity to partner with Ames Town & Gown and expose YSS shelter and residential treatment youth to this engaging, educational event.
