Employing Today's Youth

YSS offers a number of services to individuals aged 14-24 to encourage young people to find employment. Individual sessions provide an opportunity for youth to work one-on-one with staff to develop pre-employment skills such as resume development, job searching and interview preparation. All youth ages 14-24 are eligible for services.

Business Partners

YSS also works with business partners to help youth get started in their professional careers. Once a month a YSS Prevention Specialist posts job openings throughout Story County. Youth Development

Youth Development is a process which prepares young people to meet the challenges of adolescence and adulthood through a coordinated, progressive series of activities and experiences which help them to become socially, morally, emotionally, physically, and cognitively competent.  Positive youth development addresses the broader developmental needs of youth, giving them a say in decisions that impact their life.

YSS provides staff support to a number of school-based and community-based youth development groups including Ames Mayors Youth Committee, Ballard GameChangers, Collins-Maxwell ISTEP Chapter,  Boone Middle School ISTEP Chapter, Collins-Maxwell ChaMps, and Ames Middle School Builders Club.  Middle and high school aged youth serve on a committee and plan activities for public awareness about alcohol, tobacco and related issues.  This is an opportunity for youth to plan, promote, and advocate for change in their community.

Legislating Change

YSS partners with other prevention/youth development agencies in a Youth Speak Out. Prevention Day on the Hill.  Each year the Alliance of Coalitions for Change (learn more here: AC4C), a state-wide collaboration to effect positive change regarding substance abuse, holds a press conference to present information to state leaders on issues youth from Iowa are facing.  Youth and adults meet with state legislators to discuss concerns and provide state leaders with much needed insight to combat the prevalence of underage drinking and substance abuse in Iowa.  High school students from across Iowa are among the several community coalitions, representing a mixture of Iowa’s rural and urban populations at this event each year.  For more information or to get involved, contact Prevention Services at 515-233-3141.

Researchers find that children and adolescents who spend their time in several out-of-school time activities fare better developmentally than do their peers who are not involved at all or who participate in just one activity.  Source: Positive Youth Development
