Bringing Up Baby

Having a baby is an exciting time. It can also be overwhelming, especially if a mother or another family member is experiencing other life challenges. Stork’s Nest is here to help.

Stork's Nest offers:

  • Educational classes related to pregnancy, infant care and parenting
  • Clothing, supplies and equipment to assist mothers with their babies.  Items such as diapers, bottles, bedding, strollers, car seats and more are available through participation in SN approved activities and educational programs.
  • Assistance in locating and providing referrals to additional community services

Healthy First Steps

The Stork’s Nest is an incentive-based program. As participants demonstrate healthy behaviors, they earn points to redeem for baby supplies and equipment. Examples of healthy behaviors include attending classes, prenatal office visits, child immunizations, well-baby visits and home visits.

Attendance at a minimum of three programs offered through the Stork’s Nest is required before points can be redeemed.

Referrals and Health Programs

Referrals or participant incentive points are available to redeem via a variety of Story County agencies and health programs, including, but not limited to:

  • Ames Public Library
  • Early Head Start
  • Primary Health Care
  • ISU Extension Family Nutrition Program
  • Lutheran Services of Iowa (LSI)
  • Mary Greeley Medical Center (MGMC)
  • McFarland Clinic
  • Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA)
  • People Place
  • WIC

Participants may remain in the program until their child reaches 18 months of age or until the program funds are exhausted.

Enroll Today

To enroll in Stork’s Nest, participants must have proof of Story County residency, proof of income and meet income guidelines (185% of Federal Poverty Level or below). Women must also be pregnant to enroll, and can do so at any point in their pregnancy.
