Rosedale Shelter

The first shelter for runaway youth in Iowa, Rosedale Shelter and its staff offer youth in crisis a safe, structured home environment in historic Old Town Ames. The facility can house up to 15 youth.

Services are available for youth who:

  • Have run away or are homeless
  • Need help resolving family conflicts
  • Have been abused or neglected
  • Are adjudicated and waiting for court action

Emergency Services

For youth needing placement outside the home, Rosedale's caring team works together towards a common goal to reunite youth with families whenever possible.  Services available include:

  • Onsite food, shelter and 24-hour adult supervision
  • Emergency need assistance, including clothing and personal hygiene items
  • Crisis mediation
  • Group and individual support
  • Referral for specialized services

Parent placements are accepted from a limited area on a sliding fee scale. Within 24 hours, the parent(s), child and a YSS therapist/mediator will schedule one session to assess the presenting problems, identify safety issues and formulate a plan of action with the goal of unification.

Transition Support

For those who stay for an extended period of time, Rosedale provides an Area Education Agency classroom and supervised recreation activities. Staff also lead regular group discussions on a variety of educational topics, including conflict resolution, problem solving, basic life skills and sex and drug education. Additional services for clients of Rosedale Shelter include:

  • Individual, group and family counseling
  • Mental health assessments and counseling
  • Substance abuse evaluation and diagnosis
  • Court testimony and recommendation

Rosedale Shelter accepts youth who are referred by the following:

  • Juvenile Court Services
  • Department of Human Services
  • Parent placements*
  • Youth

YOUTH OPPORTUNITY CENTER

Dedicated exclusively to serving the needs of at-risk and homeless youth (age 16-22), the Iowa Homeless Youth Centers (IHYC) Youth Opportunity Center in downtown Des Moines provides a safe place for young people to connect with services.

Drop-In Services

Youth can stop in the Youth Opportunity Center daily for showers, laundry, donation center access, service referrals, and positive interaction with staff and volunteers. The facility is for youth only, providing a safe place committed to serving their specific needs.

Daily Meals

Free meals are available daily to all at-risk or homeless youth for lunch (12-1 PM) and dinner (5-6 PM)

Emergency Bed Program

The IHYC Youth Opportunity Center has nine low-barrier single bed units available for youth, age 18-21. Youth may stay for up to 30 days, while working with youth advocates to meet their immediate needs, and to plan their next step towards self-sufficiency.

Street Outreach

For transition-age youth experiencing homelessness, IHYC youth advocates not only work to address emergency needs, they also provide crisis counseling and referrals to services available through other sources.

While many youth are familiar with and able to access the Youth Opportunity Center, for those who are not, IHYC staff travel throughout the Des Moines area to reach out and offer help.

Emergency Shelter

In the event of an emergency or crisis, Francis Lauer offers short-term care for youth. We provide a safe setting for those needing placement outside of the home or respite care. Services are available for youth who:

  • Have run away or are homeless
  • Need help resolving family conflicts
  • Have been abused or neglected
  • Are adjudicated and waiting for court action

Emergency Services

The staff of Francis Lauer’s crisis response unit works with providers (e.g. Juvenile Court Services, Department of Human Services) and families to address a crisis without requiring out-of-home placement for the youth.

Once referred, a youth quickly receives services, which could include:

  • Risk/safety assessment (by phone or in-person)
  • Meeting with the family (in their home or at Francis Lauer)
  • Helping the family and child de-escalate during a stressful situation
  • Developing a safety plan
  • Looking for alternatives for emergency shelter placement
  • Assisting with referrals and resources
  • Coordinating with other providers and agencies
  • Planning for discharge (if the youth is admitted to Francis Lauer)
  • Following up with the family to ensure continued success
