From Homelessness to Hope: Lighthouse Empowers Young Parents to Build a Brighter Future

Too many young parents face the harsh reality of homelessness. More than 40 percent of homeless youth and young adults are unsheltered, meaning they sleep outside, in a car, or somewhere not meant for human habitation.

At YSS, we’re committed to changing that narrative by providing Supportive Housing programs that create safe havens, empowering them to rebuild their lives and pursue their dreams.

Lighthouse is a YSS program for families experiencing homelessness (specifically those pregnant and/or parenting within the ages 16-24). Located in Des Moines, these parents receive a safe living environment in one of our eight duplexes for up to 24 months.

Additionally, clients receive parenting and life-skills training. Lighthouse prioritizes education, employment, mental health, and physical health. A portion of their salary goes to savings, which they receive when they gain self-sufficiency and move into permanent housing.

“The end goal is self-sufficiency. We just meet them where they’re at,” said Alexa Kingkade, Program Coordinator at Lighthouse.

Alexa is the first point-of-contact for clients seeking the program. “Everybody’s journey to get them here was different, so it’s nice to get to know every new family.”

She also oversees all Lighthouse operations to make sure things go as smoothly as possible for YSS staff and participants. “I always want my staff to feel supported and to enjoy their jobs here … [and to] make sure they’re feeling like their needs are met. Same goes for our clients as well.”

“I enjoy not only being able to work with the parents but also the kids,” Alexa adds. “No matter what’s going on, they’re usually that bright light that everybody can revolve around.”
