YSS is seeking a full-time Shift Leader for our Francis Lauer shelter in Mason City. The Shift Leader is responsible for leading the other direct care staff on each shift in the activities, routine, and supervision of clients.

The Shift Leader is responsible for leading the Emergency Services Specialists and directing the activities during each shift. The Shift Leader provides supervision and care for clients while maintaining an atmosphere of safety and respect. The Shift Leader provides a structured daily living routine, ensure client’s basic needs are being met, and serving as the primary staff for assigned clients and liaison for parents/guardians. Shift Leaders are responsible for completing client intakes and incident reports and for training other direct care staff in the completion of these duties. They are also responsible for facilitating group sessions and recreation. Shift Leaders will ensure all daily documentation (intakes/discharges, all client logs, incident reports, drills, etc.) is completed prior to the end of each worked shift.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services or related field is required.
  • One year of experience in the management and supervision of adolescents in a residential setting is preferred.
  • Must be available some evenings and weekends.
  • Lead staff members (PT and FT ESSs) in difficult decision making processes including but not limited to:  client escalations, law enforcement accessing, off-site activity client participation, client consequences, etc.
  • Lead shift planning for each shift including delegating client supervision duties, group facilitation, med dosing and counting, etc.
  • Mentor and train new employees on shift.  Provide feedback, direction, and support throughout observation shifts and progression through probationary period.
  • Follow through with leadership tasks assigned by supervisor(s) during weekly staff meetings.
  • Lead the organization and implementation of special projects as needed.
  • Co-create group/rec calendar monthly with input from CWES team.
  • Serve as the liaison for between floor staff and on call staff during crises or emergencies.
  • Provide direct supervision of the clients, ensuring their presence and safety; responsible for knowing whereabouts and activities of clients at all times when supervising.
  • Serve as an appropriate role model for clients and maintain professionalism at all times. Continually model respectful behavior, social skills, appropriate boundaries, and other behavior that will be expected from the clients.
  • Effectively manage client group dynamics.
  • Instruct and assist clients in completing their assigned daily household chores and laundry so they learn proper cleaning techniques and expectations.
  • Plan and facilitate group sessions as scheduled to instruct clients in basic social skills, life skills, and provide other learning opportunities that are age and developmentally appropriate.
  • Plan and facilitate recreation activities that provide an adequate level of physical activity for the clients.
  • Plan and prepare meals as necessary to Department of Education standards.
  • Understand client behavior management system; implement goals and privileges consistently.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of all clients to ensure safe, effective supervision.
  • Provide crisis interventions as needed.
  • Provide/obtain immediate medical care when emergencies occur.
  • Answer potential client calls.
  • Maintain facility/grounds.
