Rooftop Gardens: Workforce Development Program Transforms Lives Through Innovation and Opportunity
YSS proudly announces the launch of Rooftop Gardens, an innovative workforce development program in Des Moines aimed at supporting youth who have aged out of foster care and those experiencing homelessness. This initiative offers apprenticeship opportunities, enabling participants to gain valuable employment experience while promoting access to healthy, locally-grown foods and essential nutrition education.
The youth served by Iowa Homeless Youth Centers (IHYC), a YSS organization, often face significant barriers to employment, including lack of previous job experience. YSS Rooftop Gardens aims to break this cycle of poverty by providing guided work experience and meaningful employment. Participants will receive hands-on training to operate a year-round rooftop hydroponic farm, learning key skills in growing, harvesting, and packaging produce.
“We believe in the potential of every young person, regardless of their circumstances,” said YSS President and CEO Andrew Allen. “Rooftop Gardens is more than just a job opportunity; it’s a pathway to a brighter future. By providing hands-on training and real-world experience, we’re equipping our youth with the skills they need to overcome barriers and build successful, fulfilling lives. This program embodies our commitment to empowering Iowa’s most vulnerable youth and helping them create hope and opportunity.”
Located at 2705 E. Euclid Avenue in Des Moines, YSS Rooftop Gardens features six hydroponic Freight Farms® within a state-of-the-art greenhouse utilizing vertical growing techniques. In its first year, the gardens will cultivate romaine lettuce. Each cohort of youth will undergo a six-month apprenticeship, earning wages and bonuses. The 24-week curriculum includes life skills, employability skills, food safety certifications and workforce readiness, with training facilitated by community partners and industry experts.
Community members can support YSS Rooftop Gardens in several impactful ways. By purchasing the locally-grown, nutritious greens from YSS Rooftop Gardens, they not only enjoy fresher food but also contribute to the program’s sustainability and the empowerment of at-risk youth. Additionally, by utilizing the comprehensive mental health support services offered by on-site YSS therapists at the state-of-the-art facility, community members help fund the program while enhancing their own well-being.
“We’ve designed the classroom curriculum to equip participants with both soft and hard skills that promote employability and success in work and life,” said YSS Director of Youth Empowerment and Youth Advocacy Samanthya Marlatt. “We cover everything from budgeting and meal planning to resume building and interview preparation. Our goal is to support them as they continue their journey following the program. The Rooftop Gardens facility features comprehensive programming space and offices for on-site YSS therapists, who will provide services to the broader community, enhancing access to mental health support.”
