A mental health awareness conference will be held on Friday, May 25th from 8:30am to 4:30pm at Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City.  The event is hosted by the Hamilton County Mental Health Learning Community.  The event is free of charge and open to the public, but please register in advance by contacting Carrie Hisler at 832-9550 or carrie.hisler@cicsmhds.org.

The keynote speaker is Joan Becker, author of “Sentenced to Life: Mental Illness, Tragedy, and Transformation.”  The book outlines the challenges faced by the Becker family as they tried to get mental health help for their son, Mark, who is currently serving a life sentence for the shooting death of Aplington-Parkersburg football coach Ed Thomas.

Additionally, Representative Lisa Heddens and Executive Director of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Peggy Huppert will be giving a joint presentation.

The goal of the event is to reduce the stigma and bring awareness to the issue of mental illness.

Registration: 8:00am-8:30am

Sessions: 8:30am-4:30pm

Lunch will be provided.

Continuing Education credit is available for nurses and social workers.
