First-Generation College Student Finds Opportunities Through PSERP Program

Meet Abigail – a first-generation college student who participates in the Post-secondary education retention program (PSERP) at Iowa Homeless Youth Centers (IHYC) in Des Moines.

Abigail found YSS after receiving the pandemic recovery payment. She then began conducting research on what resources and programs YSS had available and found PSERP. Through the program, Abigail has learned how to seek guidance as needed, time management skills, effectively communicate, and how to network.

“My experience with the Post Secondary Education Retention Program has been life changing. I have been lucky to be placed with such helpful advocates and mentors whom assisted me throughout my current journey.”

PSERP helps young adults to successfully complete their education goals—whether that’s an associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, or certificate of completion from a trade program. The program is a partnership of YSS’s organization IHYC and the United Way of Central Iowa.

“Through this program, I have learned that there are people who genuinely care and will go above and beyond to see me succeed. Additionally, I have learned how to ask for help when I am struggling with school or personal life.”

Last spring, Abigail was honored with the Youth Achievement Award for her participation and excellence in PSERP at the annual IHYC Achievement Tea.

Today, Abigail is a student at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) in Ankeny. She is studying Computer Information Systems and simultaneously working towards a certification in business administration. After graduating from DMACC, Abigail plans to transfer to Iowa State to receive her bachelor’s degree in computer science, with a primary focus on computer programming and application development.

“The program has been so beneficial for my success in college. The extra assistance provided helps take a weight off your shoulders. Also, having that guidance and reassurance is something I always needed.”
