Risky Business brings
youth and adults together

The 24th annual Risky Business Conference will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at the Scheman Center (Iowa State University) in Ames, Iowa.  This one-day conference brings together adults and youth from Iowa and surrounding states to develop skills and increase knowledge of community youth development and the critical issues confronting youth and professionals who work with youth today.

The Risky Business Conference attracts 650 - 800 professionals and high school youth each year.  Conference participants choose from workshops designed to support youth development, promote teen assets and character growth, increase awareness of problems facing families and teens, and provide professional development for adults who care for adolescents.

Following the opening sessions, youth and adults combine to attend workshop sessions that built on issues and points raised by the keynote speakers. The general movement of the day advances from competency-building and skill development in the morning toward a more practical application of knowledge and skills in the afternoon sessions.

The conference goals include promoting Community Youth Development, informing communities about the value of increasing developmental assets of youth, increasing awareness of major problems facing America's families and youth, examining new ways to intervene earlier in the lives of at-risk families and promoting partnerships between youth and adult.

Youth Development strategies focus on giving young people the chance to build skills, exercise leadership, form relationships with caring adults and provide services to others. Further, the Youth Development approach acknowledges that youth are resources in building communities and have much to contribute.
